Brain injury Solutions
Formerly Brain Injury Services of Southwest Virginia

The mission of Brain Injury Solutions is to help children and adults living with brain injury improve the quality of their lives and reintegrate into family and community.

While many people receive good care in the hospital, most find once they are home, they lack supporting resources. This is even more true for many who already have limited means. Survivors of brain injury often find that they are lost and unsure how to navigate life following their injury. Many must relearn how to do everyday activities such as grocery shopping, working, and using a cell phone. Even simply visiting with a friend can be a new challenge.

Fortunately, Brain Injury Solutions is here to help turn tragedy into hope! Not only are we here to fill the huge need of support during a challenging time, we provide this support free of charge for survivors of brain injury and their families.

Fran & Greg Rooker

Fran and Greg Rooker established Brain Injury Services of SWVA, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, in 2000 with financial support from The Jason Foundation. The Rookers lost their 11-year-old son, Jason, to an acquired brain injury. They experienced first hand the devastating effects of the lack of services for brain injury survivors in Southwest Virginia.

While providing information, referral, funding, and advocacy through The Jason Foundation, it became apparent to the Rookers that the families they were encountering desperately needed professional coordination of services to maximize recovery opportunities.

The Rookers' search for service providers led them to discover a successful model established by a group of families of survivors of brain injury in Northern Virginia. This discovery convinced them that a similar effort could be successful in Southwest Virginia. In July of 2001, this new organization, Brain Injury Services of SWVA, began addressing the unmet needs of survivors in Roanoke and the New River Valley.
